Analysis of Plant-Based and Herbal Therapies in Periodontal Treatment: Clinical Applications, Mechanistic Insights, and Efficacy.

Periodontitis, a widespread chronic inflammatory disease, is primarily treated with scaling and root planing (SRP). However, plant-based adjunctive therapies, known for their anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant effects, are emerging as valuable complements to SRP. This review presents findings from 24 studies on agents such as Edelweiss stem cells, pomegranate, neem, chamomile, and curcumin, which showed enhanced clinical outcomes in probing pocket depth (PPD) and clinical attachment levels (CAL) when used with SRP. These therapies offer safe and biocompatible alternatives to synthetic agents, potentially reducing antibiotic dependence and addressing antimicrobial resistance. The localized application of these agents maximizes periodontal benefits with minimal systemic exposure.
