Abstract
Open AccessOBJECTIVE: This study aimed to understand the experience of patients with external drainage tube out of hospital with biliary and pancreatic system diseases and provide a theoretical basis and reference for formulating nursing intervention measures based on the actual experience of patients with ducts. METHODS: This is a qualitative study, semi-structured in-depth interviews were used to gather information. Purposive Sampling method was used to select patients who treated in the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery and the Pipeline Nursing Outpatient Department of a triple A hospital in Yinchuan City, Ning Xia province, China, and had external drainage tubes in place outside the hospital for more than one month as research objects. Semi-structured interviews were conducted under the guidance of phenomenological research methods, and 17 participants were finally included. This study was reviewed by the Research Ethics Committee of the General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University (Ethics number: KYLL-2022-1341). The study adhered to the Declaration of Helsinki, all subjects voluntarily participated in this study. RESULTS: Four themes and ten sub-themes were extracted, including negative coping and reduced quality of life due to changes in life and work status (difficulty in role transformation: patient role intensification, negative coping with work and social life, gastrointestinal function is impaired, limited daily dietary choices, and reduced quality of life), physical and mental stress and negative experience (psychological coping burden, physical discomfort and negative experience), disease uncertainty and negative attitudes caused by lack of knowledge (lack of knowledge disease-related knowledge leads to a sense of uncertainty about recovery from the disease, negative attitude towards pipe care, lack of knowledge and skills); and seeking for medical support positively (get a suitable drainage device, perfect fixing tape and dressing, improve the status of the subsequent visit). CONCLUSION: The patients' experience of patients with drainage tube outside of hospital for hepatobiliary and pancreatic system diseases is primarily discomfort and negative experience. There are some discomfort experiences and a lack of relevant-disease knowledge, and patients are eager to get professional help from the medical staff.
